Uncorked Speakeasy Junior Achievement of South Florida hosts JA World Uncorked! II presented by Southern Wine & Spirits of Florida, on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at JA World Huizenga Center at Broward College.

Chaired by Kit Schulman, this second-annual event benefits the educational programs at JA of South Florida.

Riverwalk Trust’s Burger Battle II … Burger Nirvana!



The Riverwalk Trust hosted Fort Lauderdale’s second annual Burger Battle Presented by Publix Apron’s Cooking School Friday, May 13, 2011 on the Riverside Hotel Lawn in Downtown Fort Lauderdale

Some of the city’s top restaurants competed, showcasing their creativity and grilling skills to over 1,000 guests. The event brought together local employees, residents and businesses for an evening of gourmet burger creations, cocktails and fun, while raising funds to support the Riverwalk Trust’s mission of building and nurturing a vibrant community connected by the New River.

Attendees received an array of burger samples from local restaurants, plus three drink tickets to be used for any Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, Jack Daniel’s Lynchburg Lemonade or Bud Light.  The voted for their favorite burger, enjoyed complimentary VOSS water and viewed a local celebrity slider eating contest sponsored by Krystal.

Guests enjoyed burger bites from Capital Grille, Morton’s The Steakhouse, ROK:BRGR, Gilbert’s 17th Street Grill, Johnny V Restaurant, Big City Tavern, Pelican Landing at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six Marina, Chef Allen’s Burger Bar, Riverside Hotel, Tarpon Bend, Timpano Chophouse & Martini Bar, Blue Plate at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Rare Las Olas, Hard Rock Café & last year’s winner Georgie’s Alibi.

The celebrity-packed judging panel chose the “Best Burger in Fort Lauderdale” after sampling each of the 15 creations. Our Riverwalk Trust Judge’s Liaison,  Renee Quinn, returned to oversee the process. The panel included John Offerdahl, former Miami Dolphin &  restaurateur;  Eric Barton, editor of New Times Broward-Palm Beach;  Burger Beast,  well-known Miami food blogger;  Chef Director Jack Kane, Program Chair of Culinary Arts at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale;  Resident Chef Bil Mitchell of Publix Apron’s Cooking School;  Chef Ralph Pagano, who recently appeared on Iron Chef opposite Bobby Flay & was a finalist on the hit Fox Network TV series “Hells Kitchen”; and our“People’s Judges” Susan and Jack Seiler.

  • Eric Barton is editor of New Times Broward-Palm Beach, a paper known for its investigative journalism, criticism, and extensive dining coverage. This includes New Times’ yearly award for Best Burger, which Eric is proud to help research. Eric isn’t new to food-related contests — he’s certified as a judge by the Kansas City Barbeque Society and has competed himself in barbecue contests (he makes a mean pulled pork). You can read his writing on the New Times food blog, CleanPlateCharlie.com.
  • Burger Beast is a Miami Food Blogger who writes about his food experiences. Although the blog was created to find the Best Burger in Miami it has since gone on to include other types of foods, food coupons and deals, pertinent news, recipes and reviews of products. Burger Beast has developed a huge following for his food blogging and is known as one of the top burger experts in south Florida.
  • Chef John “Jack” Kane, C.C.A. C.E.C. C.C.E. C.H.E., is the Program Chair of Culinary Arts at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. Kane has more than 25 years experience in the food and hospitality service industry in a variety of top restaurants and resorts. He was chef instructor at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale from 2003 to 2004 and taught bachelor’s and associate’s degree seeking students. He then went to Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Miami where he was the Lead Chef Instructor.  In addition to his current position at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, Kane currently serves as President of the American Culinary Federation Greater Miami Chapter and intends to begin a student chapter at the college.
  • Former All-Pro Miami Dolphins linebacker, John Offerdahl & his wife, Lynn, currently operate seven quick-casual restaurants aptly named Offerdahl’s Café Grill – restaurants that feature “fresh-baked, JUST-GRILLED, all-day great food!”  Offerdahl’s Café Grill is also the home to the Gridiron Griller, John’s alter-ego personality!  This griller-of-the-gridiron persona developed from John’s love of the tailgate and backyard BBQ experience.  Prior to his career with the Dolphins, John attended Western Michigan University and graduated with a degree in biochemistry.  John has been involved in many community service organizations across South Florida and is currently the chairman of the board for the National Christian Foundation of South Florida, is a board member of the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association and a member of the Orange Bowl Committee. He enjoys speaking to schools, church groups and other organizations, sharing his experiences in football and business as well as his personal life.
  • Chef Ralph Pagano recently appeared on Iron Chef opposite Bobby Flay and also was a finalist on the hit Fox Network TV series aptly named “Hells Kitchen” where he worked elbow to elbow with Chef Gordon Ramsay cooking and creating gourmet food under fire. He has owned and operated two successful restaurants and a full service catering company as well as gourmet take away store and prime meat market in the Hamptons. He has appeared on Iron Chef America, where he competed against and lost to Iron Chef Bobby Flay. More recently he has appeared in the food/travel reality show Pressure Cook on the MOJO HD cable network channel.  He has gained noteworthy accolades with his executive chef roles at New York City’s West Broadway Restaurant, Bobby Van’s Steakhouse and as both owner and chef of The World Pie Restaurant Group. Ralph has created a cult following and is set to try and feed the world.
  • Resident Chef Bil Mitchell has been climbing the ladder of culinary excellence since his high school days in New York. He has worked at and managed various American regional and seafood restaurants in Ohio, Virginia and Florida. Bil gained additional experience when he began teaching for Apron’s Cooking School in Sarasota. He has taken advantage of the opportunity to learn from guest chefs such as Todd English, Wolfgang Puck, Rachael Ray, Paula Dean and John Ash. Under the expert eye of Corporate Chef Tim Donnelly, Bil has attained the professional experience needed to excel as our first promoted Apron’s Resident Chef.
  • Local residents and celebritiesSusan and Jack Seiler will bring the personal touch to the tasting.  Jack is an attorney and Susan is the driving force in the Seiler family for organizing, programming and leading their active and engaged batch of children.  As the “people’s judges,” they’ll provide a different perspective.

Riverwalk Trust will host Riverwalk Trust’s Get Downtown,, Fort Lauderdale’s largest outdoor cocktail hour, offering the best Flavors of Fort Lauderdale from local restaurants and bars in the courtyard Plaza at Las Olas, 333 E. Las Olas Blvd. on Friday, April 8, 2011, from 5 pm to 8 pm. Get Downtown will partner with YOLO restaurant, also located in the same plaza.

American Red Cross Fashion Runway Show



The lights, the fashion, and the glamour return once again to Fort Lauderdale as the Broward County Chapter of the American Red Cross hosts the third annual New York-style Runway Fashion Show debuting famed designer Victoria Lopez Castro’s spring/summer 2011 designs.

Victoria is a world-class designer and one of the most up and coming Hispanic fashion designers as well. Her couture is a must have for celebrities such as Gloria Estefan, tennis pros Mary Jo Fernandez and Monica Seles, Rita Moreno, Cristina Sarlegui, Vanna White, and news anchor Alina Mayo Azze.


Over 400 guests attended the Fashion Show 2010 and raised more than $50,000 for the emergency disaster services and health and safety programs offered locally by the American Red Cross.




Did you know that the Red Cross offers a variety of health & safety courses in our community? They include Babysitter’s Training, CPR, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard Training, Water Safety & Pet First Aid.

  • 16,607 people were trained in lifesaving CPR and First-Aid courses
  • 426 young Red Crossers completed Babysitters Training
  • 97,592 people enrolled in aquatic programs


Mission Statement
The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.

The Circle of Wise Women’s JA World Uncorked! a Success



As a founding member of the Circle of Wise Women at Junior Achievement of South Florida,  Renée Korbel Quinn was part of the dynamic team that developed the concept for an inaugural fundraiser called Uncorked! With the involvement of Southern Wine & Spirits, the premise was to create a unique event that offered guests the opportunity to experience a wine tasting and food sampling with a party feel without long speeches or presentations.  Imagine attending an event where you can come and go, spend part of the evening or party till the last dance!

Along with chairs Stacie Weisman & JoLynn Lombardi,  Renée took on the task of making this event a success.  As Sponsorship Chair she worked with Diana Metcalf, JA’s Director of Major Gifts, to create a sponsorship program as unique as the event itself.  Barbara Capeletti took on the amazing auction and Kit Schulman guided the decor to create one of the best events of the season.  In addition to her committee role, Renée & QuinnProQuo donated Social Media strategic planning,  created and launched  a facebook presence for the Circle of Wise Women and developed integral media partnerships to create awareness for the event.

On October 30th 2010 over 300 guests joined the Circle of Wise Women at the “Moulin Rouge” inside JA World for a memorable evening of indulgence. Senses were delighted with tastings of over 300 wines, spirits, decadent food bites and dancing to benefit Junior Achievement in their new state-of-the-art 60,000 square foot facility, JA World Huizenga Center at Broward College.  Funds raised at this inaugural event benefit the Educational Programming at Junior Achievement of South Florida.

As guests entered JA World, a 59,000 sq. ft. state-of-the art mini-city, they were welcomed by two models in a larger than life bubbling champagne glass. They continued on through the JA Biz Towns enjoying the eclectic array of food including cheese fondue from The Melting Pot, filet mignon sliders from Capital Grille, ceviche from Chef Remi and decadent blue cheese mashed potatoes from White Apron Catering in Lake Worth.  Decadent bites throughout the JA World Biz Towns included BRIO Tuscan Grill, The Cheese Course, Forever Sweet Cakes by Design, Hibiscus Café, Caliente Kitchen, Mojo, Chef Remi’s Catering, TooJay’s Original Gourmet Deli, Cold Stone Creamery, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Uncle Julio’s Fine Mexican Food, and Blue Martini.

Over 30 wineries and spirits from around the world offered tastings of over 300 varieties, many of which were available for purchase through Crown Liquor. Silent auction items  included an all inclusive trip to Jamaica,  a one-of-a-kind 18 ct. white gold & diamond necklace provided by Daoud’s Fine Jewelry, a Prada Leather Bag provided by American Express and a custom Vince Neil autographed Washburn Guitar.

The evening culminated in Finance Park with an extravagant Moulin Rouge themed party complete with can-can girls, stilt walkers, decadent desserts, aerial acrobatic shows and dancing to live music by the Steven Chase Band.  David Johnson, A Basket Affair,  provided the decor for the evening.

About our Passion:

More than 55,000 students learn about finances, banking, commerce, jobs, and work and much more through the 25 programs offered by Junior Achievement. The Circle of Wise Women’s goal is to support these efforts. At JA World’s facility two experiential programs focused on 5th grade and 8th grade students. After extensive in-class, curriculum driven preparation, the students come for an onsite visit where they are an “adult” for a day. The 5th grade students work in JA BizTowns learning to run a business and 8th grade students learn personal financial responsibility and budgeting; skills that every student should know to become a successful adult.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward present Déjà Vu Homecoming!



Can you remember your Homecoming? Were you a brain, a jock, a band geek, a cheerleader or in the glee club? Join us on October 9, 2010 as we celebrate the musical hits from the ’50s to the ’90s for an all-night extravaganza that we like to call Déjà Vu. Located at the world-famous Bahia Mar Beach Resort and produced by Sixth Star Entertainment, Déjà Vu is the party of the year you won’t want to miss.

This year’s honorees include:
• Nat Moore of the Miami Dolphins
• Bill Fauerbach of Publix Super Markets, Inc.
• Tom & Ginny Miller of Miller Construction

Déjà Vu is a retro, costumed, all-night celebration honoring South Florida’s finest child advocates. The event is Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County’s single-largest fundraising event of the year. Our signature event is held at the Bahia Mar Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale and runs from 6:00pm to midnight. The event’s festivities include the dynamic sights and sounds of the 1950s-1980s, cocktails, silent auction, dinner and dancing. All night long (and well into the morning), 400-500 guests experience non-stop entertainment and surprises in the form of musical acts, large scale dance productions and the always-anticipated, top-secret, live headline performer. The purpose of the night is to celebrate 36 years of mentoring success in South Florida through Big Brothers Big Sisters. About the Guardians of the Pink Ribbon: Guardians of The Ribbon, dressed in pink fire suits, will drive pink fire trucks across the country every year to spread our awareness campaign supporting all women in their fight against cancer. The Guardians bring the tour to help raise money and awareness for the non-profit entities that help women in their City and State. In addition, this non-profit supports and helps other non-profit programs raise money by bringing the pink fire trucks to various fund raisers to assist in the efforts at no charge to the organization. As Guardians of The Ribbon, our goal is to spread the “Cares Enough to Wear Pink” campaign until all are in pink shirts. Why? Because Pink Heals!

Riverwalk Trust hosts ‘The Original’ Riverwalk Mutts and Martinis Yappy Hour, Fort Lauderdale’s largest outdoor, pet-friendly cocktail hour. The goal of the event is to bring together the Downtown community and their favorite four-legged friends for a night of celebration and networking while raising funds for the Riverwalk Trust. The event will be held along the Riverwalk at Briny Riverfront Pub. This is the fifth Riverwalk Mutts and Martinis Yappy Hour, which has raised more than $57,000 for the Riverwalk Trust, a non-profit organization that serves as a catalyst in building and nurturing a vibrant community centered along the New River.

On this fun evening along Fort Lauderdale’s Riverwalk, a $25 donation ($20 prepay online) gives attendees two complimentary drinks, appetizers, live music, silent auction, chances to win raffles and prizes and lots of fun treats and activities for their pets including dog massages, canine contests and doggie ice cream. Dog adoptions will be available courtesy of the Humane Society of Broward County, and a portion of the proceeds from each ticket sold will go towards the Humane Society of Broward County.
